They would appear to be the 'Urei 800H Custom H.F. Horn'

Search on my post RE: 'Urei Custom Horn Mod' :
    http://www.hostboard.com/forums/alte...highlight=urei

Therein you should find a link to the Urei doc w/pics of it.

Interesting that they also came out of a studio, like mine purportedly.
Though mine came out of 'big red' monitors. Not actual big red cabinets afaict, but perhaps some built to similar spec., or Big Reds then later modified.
I should try to figure the dates on mine.

    * Update/clarification: Mine are Altec 604e's, with the 800H horn affixed to them (perhaps by Urei or we'd suspect the studio engineer themselves). Now, worth mentioning, mine do have markings on each which might reflect that someone had done some 604e matching at some point (appeared to be Fs notations IIRC).
Will have to record and decode when I next pull them out.

The units in the OP picture look odd because of the old style connectors on the comp driver cap and the new style 16" white frames similar to a 421. The magnet structure and grey colour looks like a 604 E.

    Magnarc,

GPA has a current version of these speakers. You could use the price of these plus $US450 approx.(shipping for 2) as a bidding benchmark.

Old covers can appear on newer speakers. And when Urei first ordered, the E was current. There ARE tangerine E models...I have seen them.

All that said, I do not think there is any way possible these are "H" models. Almost certainly E or early G models,

parts were phased in rather than a hard switchover date.

As far as value, I'd expect to pay $1200 US for a set of these, plus shipping.

Re: 604-8Hs with a history on Oz eBay

Where's the original spkr box ? Wouldn'd they be worth much more that way ?

Which AC/DC years please ? Would like to see some documented provenience.

These seem too gleaming & glossy to date back UREI Mfgr & Sydney AC/DC sessions

Just my hunch but I'm suspicious. Tho I don't claim to be a UREI expert.

UREI's I've seen had metal (I think) horn with slots & foam edges

    And used 604-8G's ? ....which was last alnico 604, wasn't it ?

    H was the last Alnico.

The speakers under discussion are too old to be "G" and certainly old enough to be Ureis.

There is no "Urei manufacture" they were made by Altec.

    Wouldn't G be older than H ?

"There is no "Urei manufacture" they were made by Altec."

UREI was a different manufacturer that used 604-8G's that they modified

They are too old to be G as I said they are probably E. Please read where I said I do not think these are G in the preceding reply.

Then question asked was if the G was the last Alnico, in fact H was.

I can understand the "Urei manufacture" confusion, but Urei used both older and newer 604's. A better wording would have been "used by Urei" or similar, referencing the 604 it wasn't manufactured by Urei. Text can be a confusion medium for communicating info.

Yes I did some digging and see UREI used G & H as well as H ferrite - so like I said, I'm no expert on UREI history but did work in the recording Biz in the late 80's. We were dealers for UREI which by that time were owned & made by JBL & employed a new JBL coax that had an imitation of that famous blue UREI horn & roll surround woofer.

JBL wanted to capture this monitor market with the recording industry's 'Herd' Brand buying behavior.

I took one of these JBL/UREI Coaxial spkrs apart at the time and was surprised by the phase plug that had converging bore holes like the Tannoys !
